Advice To Photo 1:

If you’re in Photo 1 and you’re reading this, keep reading. I’ve been looking at all your guys’ photos, and don’t get me wrong, a lot of them are really sweet pictures.

But I’ve noticed a few things that you guys should stop doing, because they are not making your photos any better:

a. don’t grab stuff, position stuff, and just take a snapshot of it and call it a done deal. Look around, look for things out of the ordinary. Take pictures the way the scene was when you found it.

b. Follow the guidelines, but do NOT be afraid to put a twist in em, make the picture. don’t just take it.

c. Do your assignments. They are most of your grade. Just do your work!

I’m telling you guys these things because i was in YOUR position last year, I know some things are hard to do. Trust me. I STILL hardly know PhotoShop. But since my grade depends on it, I try as hard as I can to do a good job, and get the job done. It’s not that hard.

  2. I read your blog and I completely agree with you. I will openly admit that I am one of the people who will position things to get a picture. I need to work on that. I guess my problem is that I don’t see things out of the ordinary. I like things organized and neat. That might also be why I don’t ‘twist’ the picture. I will try to remember this advise. Thank you.

  4. Thanks for the advice. I think it is a good idea to just take the picture of how you found it. If you move objects around it’s not as good. It’s also good advice to do your assignments. Doing assignments is most of your grade. Once again thanks for your advice!

  5. Thank you for the information but what if their is something in the photo that should not be their, is it ok to remove it? My biggest trouble is saving the photo in the right file. I can never seem to save in in the right file, I do the work but then when I think that it is in the right file it really isn’t.

    1. No, if you think you need to remove something, just shoot at a different angle! :)

  6. She is right that somethings are hard to get and others are really easy to get but the main majority of photos are hard to get because they are sometimes just really hard to find and to get to. At other times though they are quite easy to get but hard to find. Which leads me to saying that some are also easy to find and get. The photos that we have gotten so far in my opinion are hard to get and to set up to get and to find the right angle and to get the right exposer and settings and to get it in rule of thirds or natural framing and stuff like that and to find that right color balance so that is will make the picture look good.

  7. I agree with you. I may have positioned photos once or twice, but usually I like to find cool things the way they are. I have to say that I don’t really ‘twist’ things either, and I’ll try to work on that. Thanks a lot!

  8. I think it is nice that a person who is more experienced than us at photography is trying to help us out. Her tips are helpful and I will take them into consideration. Its nice to see that people have gone through the same thing as us for years and they get to be really good. Photoshop is a complicated thing to use and I do not think anyone could become a master at it unless if they used it 24/7.

I think that was very helpful actually. Although, i always try and take photographs that are “out of the ordinary”, but a little advice will always help. And it’s always nice to know someone wants to help you become a better photographer, or better at anything else.

  10. I think those are great rules to go by in photography. I know some people like to move things in a photo and make them look natural, and a lot of the times you can tell it was moved and not natural. I think that finding stuff thats natural is a lot better because the photos generally look cooler.

  12. I read your blog and I think that the advice was really really good. I will admit that I have done some of these to try to make my photos better but knowing that they actually don’t make my photos any better makes me not wanna do any of these any more. In the past I’m not gonna lie that I have positioned stuff and moved it around but I do know that it wont make my photo’s any better then they are. It does make sense that you should take pictures of the things that are in your photos rather than the things you positioned there. So thanks for the advice! I definitely will be using in it to take my pictures and make them a lot better than they already are.

I agree with you. And now that you have mentioned those things about taking a picture and just calling it a done deal. I have been doing that. I need to not do that anymore. I need to be more natural when I’m taking my photos for a grade. I need to make the picture more of something and not just take a picture. With your blog it’s helped me realize these things and now I can try and fix those things. I have never really noticed my major mistakes now till you noticed them and spoke out to us.

I must say i think that she is definitely right. because, photography is supposed to be about capturing a vision of how you see things not just putting an apple on a piece of paper and taking a picture of it , and she is also most definitely truthful when she says that we need to do are work, its easy work and its stupid when we just don’t do it, for any class. So thanks for the tips anonymous gal! (:

  19. Thanks for the advise(: I never really thought about it that way, but its totally true. If you make a photo look the way you want by moving things around, then its not a natural picture. I have to admit, i am one of those people that will make a mistake like putting things in places they shouldn’t be and calling it a photo. I don’t know why, but it makes me think that the picture looks better that way. Its something I’m going to try to work on.

I agree with the part A. How you said ‘don’t grab stuff, position stuff, and just take a snapshot of it and call it a done deal.’ I never really noticed, but I have done that with my photos, and your right. I take snapshots of things and call it good. I’m not looking around for random things, and taking them the way I see it the first time. I need to start doing that and just take the photo the way I see it. You are also right on the make the photo, don’t just take it. You want to make the photo yours, and maybe tweak it up a little. I totally agree!

Yes, you always have to do your work and try your hardest even though your not an expert. Soo about the homework i totally agree. I have a pretty bad grade in this class and i need to get it up. I just have not been turning in all of my weekend assignments. Which is bad cause they are my main grade. But hey thank you for the advice and writing to us. Hopefully people will listen to you instead. Thank You…!

  25. I think that is very true that you have to leave things the way you found them. Sometimes things can look cheesy if they are posed and sometimes they can look collected when they are posed. When pictures and just found and taken, they look more natural. I believe that “Just do your work” is a good piece of advice because a lot of people in my class procrastinate and do not do assignments. It is really not that difficult to press a button on a camera of a family member. :P

    1. I’m talking about just random objects in your yard or bedroom or something. Like, when I say that, people are an exception, because sometimes your ‘model’ doesn’t exactly know how to pose and feel comfortable at the same time. If you’re photographing people, you have to make them feel comfortable with the situation. but random plastic things, don’t position them, most people can tell when you do it.

I’m also glad that you don’t know much about photoshop because I think it is really confusing and I don’t plan on getting it anytime soon. Thanks for this advise. I totally agree with you. I know that I need to think more outside the box on my photography pictures, and so something out of the ordinary. Instead of setting up a shot, I know I need to find something that is already different and set up. I really liked your advise and think that it is helpful advise that I would use from now on. The only way to get better is to make mistakes, learn, ad fix what you did wrong. You also have to try different things to expand what you can do. I hope to hear more advise like yours in the future. Anywho, it was super-duper of you to write us little students a nice list of advice. I especially took a liking to the last one, the one about doing the assignments, because that is just some good, common-sense, down-to-earth type of a maxim. Thanks for the great advice! I like the idea about how we should just capture the moment. Whenever I see professional photography they usually capture a moment not a scene set up by man. I don’t understand “b” though. And “c” is pretty ridiculous. Psh… work… useless. Im kidding when I say that. But thanks for the advice.
