FINAL. Theme – classically vintage.

This is my final: The Theme I chose is classically vintage, starting the summer out with ‘calm’ and neutral colors so it can end with ‘exciting and charismatic ideas’. For the pictures, I bumped up the clarity, contrast, and exposure. I also knocked down the saturation and vibrance to give it a “lighted” look, with light and neutral colors, resembling vintage, But to where it’s still classy. Inspiration: Anna Saverimuttu , she has a few simple lightly colored portraits that I really liked!

We had to take 11 fresh, new photos. Starting with a Business Portrait. The portrait doesn’t tie in with my theme, it wasn’t supposed to. I like this business portrait, I’d say it’s one of the best I’ve done all year. When I first started using the studio at the beginning of the year, I didn’t know how to set up lighting or all that jazz. but I’ve pretty much had to teach myself the basics. So here’s my portrait of Bailey.

creative viewpoint.

For this one, I couldn’t think of a darn thing. But walking home from the bus stop yesterday, I stopped at the deli and bought a good ol’ mountain dew, yup. I’m a dew junkie. Anyways, I was sitting at my table thinking, thinking, thinking. I took a sip of the Dew, and looked down into the bottle at the bubbles, in disappointment in myself. That’s when I looked down the hole where the cap goes on the bottle for my dew. My creative viewpoint. That’s when the lightbulb turned on, the fat lady sang, and pigs flew.

your choices- Portraits.

1:

I decided to do a portrait because I’m starting to love doing portraits of my friends, plus my friend wanted me to take pictures of her for her Facebook pictures, of course. I decreased the brightness, increased the contrast, increased the blacks, increased the clarity, decreased the saturation in Camera Raw, and pow, I came up with this. I like this portrait because she’s really artsy but she’s sitting in front of a casual chess board, it doesn’t fit her but it does at the same time. Opposites attract!

[your choice-portraits.]

2:

I was taking portraits of my friend Paulina, and I decided to use both of them for my “your choice” photos because I couldn’t choose one or the other, I really like them both. Just like the last one, I decreased the brightness, increased the contrast, increased the blacks, increased the clarity, decreased the saturation in Camera Raw, and it has that same “lightly-colored vintage” look to it. Choosing this theme actually came from how I edited these two portraits, because I liked how they turned out like this. It’s also a big step because I usually try to make my pictures really bright and contrasted, so this was a little extra change in the tossup. And the chair is simple, it really makes her stand out.

limited DOP.

So this one was easy. There was a Werther’s coffee candy on the counter, on the white tiled countertop, and boom. There’s barely any depth for anything around it, and it’s similar to Macro, I’m very aware. But like my purpose, there’s very limited depth of field. By the way, these candies taste weird. Butterscotch, all the way! The coffee one? No comparison.

large DOP.

for my large depth of field shot, I went desperate. I’ll admit it. But for as much as I could think of with nothing interesting around the house besides a newborn baby, I came up with this. And my camera was being bipolar and wouldn’t focus to the back wall, but I got it to focus almost in the middle, so even though it’s not larger than life, it still shows the depth because to me, the stuff by the wall, my snowmobile helmet and softball/mitt, they look like they’re further away, which was what I was hoping for!

leading lines.

My leading lines picture was the last one that I took, and It was really easy. You see lines everywhere, and anywhere. There’s a lot of lines in this photo, so I thought it fit perfect. My mom just planted new veggies and flowers in one of her eleven gardens, and my dog Kahlua- a 90 pound Rottweiler- doesn’t know to not go in the garden. So we had to put up a little wire fence around it to keep her out! The lines lead in all different directions but the focus for this picture is definitely on the wire fence.

rule of 3rds.

I have no idea what it is, it’s just a decoration in my friend’s house.. that reminds me of a ship’s steering wheel. I chose this picture for the rule of thirds because it obviously follows the Rule of Thirds, but it also ties in with my theme and fits the color scheme of some of my other photos. All I did to edit this picture was crop a little off the bottom, because the gold line across the bottom was distracting.

natural framing.

So looking around my backyard, I was thinking ‘natural”, and ‘framing’. I thought of plants. And with the eleven, yes eleven, different gardens my mom has, I ha to find something. I think it’s a tomato plant? It has wire so the vines grow straight up, so yeah it’s a tomato plant. It’s framing around the plant, which is just a baby plant, only a tiny little thing. I took pictures of bananas in baskets, and other plants, and things through my fence; but this is the one that made the cut!

balance.

I saw this red fuzzy ball in my friend’s dining room because it was on a decoration and I just had to take a picture of the fuzzy ball. With my short attention span, it’s normal for me to get excited over a fuzzy ball. But when I looked back at the picture, I didn’t notice how from left to right the colors make a pattern, balancing it out! black, red, black red, so there’s a little bit of each color on each half of the picture. Here’s my balance:

simplicity.

I chose to do a picture of my friend holding a dandelion for simplicity, because the dandelion itself is just a weed. It looks like a flower and from far away, someone would say “Oh look a yellow flower!” but when they get up close to it, it changes to “Oh it’s a stupid dandelion”. It can be pretty at times but it’s just a weed. Also, her hand is just a hand. But actually looking at it, it’s more complex than just skin bones and muscles. (and tissue, etc.) But every hand is different, has different finger pints, lines, creases, nails, different everything! But it’s still just a hand.

One response to “FINAL. Theme – classically vintage.”

  1. Portrait- Looks good for the light, with her being off center and all the extra space up top it is a bit awkward though. Crop in tighter either in camera (preferred) or in PS if you did not do it while shooting.

Mtn Dew and the second portrait of your friend look great. The second portrait great use of window light, very nice.

Nice shooting. Good clean images with nice editing.
