portraits..

This week I decided to do portraits of Jesi. I took pictures of her last minute because my other idea didn’t work out very well. I WAS going to take pictures of my friends who are in couples. But two of the those couples had no time to do it when I had time, and the third couple got engaged the day I was supposed to photograph them, so I hadn’t heard from them all day! But now I have portraits of Jesi, and planning it about 20 minutes before shooting, the pictures turned out better than I had thought they would’ve. I tried using different angles and neutral colors around her to contrast her hair, and I think I did well for planning this for not even 20 minutes, shooting for 10, and in about 30 degree weather!

Inspiration: Christina G ! So I’ve always liked her pictures since I first saw her blog linked to the cdaphoto blog. I wanted to do her for my inspiration this week not because her pictures are wayyy better than mine, but because they have the neutral colors in them, and she brings out the beauty on the person’s face, or in their smile or laugh, and I try to do that while taking portraits. If you take a person and they look mad or sad without you meaning to make them look like that, well, I think that’s a wrong of your doing. I think for simple happy portraits, the person needs to be happy.

  1. For a short amount of time, this works well.
Some things to consider- have the subject remove gum from mouth before shooting a portrait session.
Good variety of angles, watch your backgrounds so that there are not distracting elements.
Please use the full 2 weeks, not one day. Thank you.

  2. i liked these portraits, they turned out nicely for such a short amount of time. I liked the angles, the clarity, and the white balanced looks nice, due to the white background. which i also liked because it wasn’t distracting, and it was a little blurred out so it brought more attention to your subject. nice work. i like also, how you described what you did to the photos as far as editing went. thank you. i’m always on everyone for this. the only thing i would adjust is how far you go into detail with your descriptions, (so more detail please) and the one picture with the gum in her mouth. the gum was very distracting. other than that, keep it up! (:

  3. I love these portraits! Good angles, but the cars in the background are a little distracting. I like how her smiles is natural and doesn’t look forced or faked. Awesome photos (:

  4. I think you did a great job on these portraits, they are done really well i think. My favorite two are the 5th and 6th ones down, I love the how the color in her hair really shows. Some of the backgrounds are a little distracting, but you still did a really good job.

  5. I like these portraits a lot. The lighting is all perfect in all of them. I also liked how the girl’s shirt was simple so that you focus on her face. The background is good and simple in most of the pictures but in a couple of them, there are cars in the background, which makes it kind of distracting. Otherwise, good job !

  6. Well, I really like these portraits. I know that it’s hard to get good pictures of people if they aren’t good models, but more than anything it’s the photographers’ ability to capture just the right moment that makes a portrait awesome. I think you did a good job on these overall. I like that her eyes are in focus for 99% of these. A portrait really isn’t a portrait if you can’t see the subjects eyes, if you ask me. I like the first picture, she looks sort of arrogant and mean. Although, I know she’s not like that. haha, but it’s the fact that you captured an emotion that makes it cool. I don’t really like the second picture. I think it’s because of the tilt of her head and the tilt of the camera, it makes the whole shot a little off. The laughing picture is cute, but I think twitch is right about the gum. I think you did a really good job with the colors. the white background goes really really well with her bright red hair. My favorite out of all of these, though, is the fourth one up from the bottom. I love her expression, I love the color. You also have some leading lines in there with the sidewalk going off towards the cars. In most cases I would say that the cars are distracting and they take away from the picture, but in this one I honestly think they add a little bit of…. character to the photo. :) Her eyes are beautiful, I love her hair, and her nose ring and her makeup. But it’s not the person that makes the picture, its the photographer, so nicely done Kaylee! keep it up!

  7. You did a great job on your portraits. They were all great but i really liked the one of the eye. You can see all the details. I also like the one where she has plain black shirt with her hair pulled back. LIke you said her eyes really stood out. in some of your portraits the cars were distracting but overall you did a great job. I like all the angles that you shot from. Great Job!!!

  8. These photos are great! I love how you had her do many different poses and emotions. You shot at great angles that weren’t distracting. My favorite photo is the close up of the eye. I am assuming you used macro, which you did very well. One piece of advice i would give you is that in the photo where she is leaning back there are cars in the background that cause attention away from your subject. I would just crop the cars out and i think it would be better. But i like the leading lines in this photo. Nice job and keep it up!

  9. I think that the portraits are pretty good. The only thing is that I think you should try taking out the blue lights in the background. Also, in one of the pictures I think the gum in her mouth was kind of distracting. Other than that, I really like the way her hair shows up against the white. I also like the picture of just her eye. Keep working and your photos will get even better!

  10. I like these portraits. You do a good job at taking pictures of people. One thing I would change is that in one of the pictures her mouth is open and she has gum. Its bright blue and kind of distracting. Another is what is in the background a couple of the pictures have cars in the background and that is kind of distracting too. The ones with just the wall in the background look a lot better. I think that it would make the pictures a lot more interesting if you made the background really dark since her shirt is white and her hair is a brighter color it would make her stand out a lot. But good job at taking different angles. It looks good.

  11. Good Job on your portraits. I think some of the photo’s backgrounds are distracting and subtract from the photo so I would just stick to the white background that you did on most of them. Also, in one of your photos the girl has bright blue gum that is distracting… you should remove that next time. I like how you used different angles. They look nice. I think you did really well on your portraits. Keep up your good work! :)

  12. Good job with your portraits, I thought they were very well done. Overall, I enjoyed looking through your pictures but I have a few comments. The girl in the portraits, she had gum in her mouth and it was distracting. If you limit distracting thing in the picture, then the viewer can focus more on the subject (girl). I think you could get a little more creative and go out side the box with some of your photo’s. And in the first section, some of the pictures were blurry and the lighting wasn’t in your favor. Your going in the right direction, thank you for sharing you pictures!

  13. Looking through your pictures I felt like I was seeing a lot of the same stuff. It’s great that you have people as the main focus in a lot of pictures but try something different sometimes and think outside the box. I do like the black background on the pictures and the way her hair really stands out. The angles and lighting are nice as well. My favorite is the third picture but I also have a giant problem with it. When taking the picture, especially if she’s going to have her mouth open, the gum needs to be taken out. The picture and pose are honestly great and the picture works so well but when I look at her the gum pulls away from the picture drastically. Also when getting close up maybe work on removing any distractions like excess make up or stray hairs. Over all you’re pictures are very nice Kaylee! nice work.
