FINAL: Moment.

This is my FINAL for 2nd Semester of Photo 5. Also, it’s my last final I’ll take in high school photography. So technically, this is my SIXTH photo final. And this quote ties my final together: “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” -Buddha  [found this quote here.]

Part 1-

PORTFOLIO. Here are TEN of some of my best pictures. In no order though, I cannot pick favorites out of even the favorites of my pictures.

One. Alright, so I took this picture in July of 2010 in Seaside Oregon. Yep, I’ve got an oldie in here. I took this picture as an 11×14 (inch) print with me to Regionals for SkillsUSA in March 2011, and it is now hanging on my wall. I have also gotten a lot of positive feedback about this picture, so I think it deserves to be in here. I took it with my old Nikon Coolpix L100 camera that had no adjustable settings besides modes like Sports, Flash, Night, etc. My mom was walking in her zebra print pajama pants and I saw her footprints in the sand and boom. This is the result.

Two. This portrait of Katie is one of the first portraits I have taken in natural lighting, and that I actually like. I took this picture in May of 2011 in the yard space for the Shop classes. I like how there was chalk and writing on the brick wall; it gives the picture a little flare, but doesn’t take away from the subject. I like the lighting too, her face is illuminated well and there aren’t very any shadows at all.

Three. This picture of a lovely hibiscus was taken on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kaua’i in March 2011. I went to Hawaii for Spring Break [2011] and while Katrina and I were checking out the condos and their surroundings, we passed by huge hibiscus bushes in front of our condo complex, and I just stopped walking, and told Katrina to hold the flower. I had a vision it seemed like, I just had a great idea at a spur of the moment, and I have loved this picture ever since. I love the bright coloring too.

Four. This picture of Christina is from the first time I ever used a DSLR camera, hers in fact, and for my first time with a nice camera that I could actually adjust settings on, I think this picture turned out pretty well and I love the coloring of it. I took this picture in either November of 2010, within the first month or so of taking Photo 3.

Five. This picture is actually from my final for last semester, which was “Relationship”. This picture has gotten a lot of positive feedback, and I think it is one of the best couple portraits I have ever taken. Garrett and Emily, the subjects, aren’t together anymore but I still love the set of the pictures I took of them. Garrett even put it on a “cutest couple” contest on Facebook, and it had tons and tons of comments and ‘likes’. Within about 20 minutes of him posting it there, I think it already had over 25 likes, if I remember correctly, so that made me pretty excited. But I love how well this turned out, despite the weather conditions that day. It was super windy and around 40 degrees, and there was snow on the ground. So I’m glad they weren’t shivering too bad, and actually looking too cold in this photo.

Six. If you haven’t noticed, I go to Oregon a lot. I have gone to Oregon every single year since I can only remember. Well last summer [2011], I went to Portland for my grandparents’ 50th anniversary, so during that week over there, my dad, his girlfriend, my aunt, uncle, my cousin and her friend, my cousin and his girlfriend, and I went to Seaside for a few hours. The weather was horrible and the water of the ocean was freezing. We only stayed on the beach for about a half hour, but this shot that I got has been a favorite since I took it. I love how the water is slowly flowing around my cousin and his girlfriend’s feet, and how they are matching. We all rolled up our pants and were running around barefoot, so it was only appropriate to capture that.

Seven. This picture was also taken in Hawaii last Spring. We went to a luau, which are awesome to take pictures at, besides the weird lighting. Hawaiians like red lighting… they really like red lighting.. but I was mostly taking pictures of the peacocks walking around, and the performance that had fire. This picture turned out the best, of the photos that were of the fire performance. I just really like it, and  love how the shutter speed worked with the fire being thrown around.

Eight. I think this would have to be one of my best studio portraits that I’ve done, that haven’t been complete portraits, (where they’re face-to-face). I get a sense of passion for ballet when I look at this picture, like there is emotion pouring out of it. Maybe because ballet is thought to be of as graceful, perhaps?! I took this of Jordan in January 2011. It wasn’t my first session in the studio, but it was one of the first few. Bailey was actually supposed to take these pictures, but after the third picture she took, she handed the camera to me and went and talked to people for the rest of the time. So, given, I took the pictures and I was happy with how they turned out. The fill light was the biggest difficulty, since it kept getting in almost every picture.

Nine. This next picture is more than just an alright picture of a fountain to me. This picture is in here for the reason of memories and it being a favorite because it brings back great memories of a week I had last sumer [June 2011], rather than it being a great photo. This photo was taken at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri when I went there for the SkillsUSA Nationals Leadership & Championship Conference and we went to see the Royals play. Not gonna lie, it was a very boring baseball game. But I loved the fountains. I went there with Alyssa Schmidt, Brittney Price, Jessica Parsons, and Mr. Jones. Twitch had something going on in the family so my school counselor Mr. Jones was our chaperone. Allison Parsons was actually my partner for my competition, but she couldn’t come, so we brought Alyssa instead. Which was super fun, because us four girls shared a hotel room on the top floor. Yeah, we were a little loud from laughing at our craziness until 3am. On this trip, I learned so much and I gained a lot out of it. It showed me how hard high school and college students can work and what they can achieve when they do so. I will never forget that week. Alyssa and I also hung out with a group of friends, who happened to be all guys. I bet Twitchell is shaking his head right about now. But those guys were  good guys and one is now one of my best friends and we talk everyday. So, all in all, that is why this picture is in here. It brings back great memories.

Ten. This was taken in September of 2010 in my friend’s backyard. I really liked this picture because of the angle, and how it shows detail on the stem. But mostly because of the angle. Everyone always takes pictures of flowers from the top. Even though a dandelion is a weed, oh well. I really wanted to try a different angle. This is what I came up with, while I was bored because my friend was taking a shower or something. I took this picture, along with the picture of a beach, to Regionals for SkillsUSA. I liked the neutrality of the colors too. Which is weird because at the time that I took this picture, I was still in my phase I went through of liking incredibly bright colors. So, neutrality is good, still a fan of it.

Okay, and on to Part dos.

Part 2-

THEME: Moment. Here are 10 pictures revolving around my theme plus 3 require pictures. I realized that the 3 required were a part of the 10 for the theme the day before this final was due, so I had 3 extra for my theme. But hey, the more the better. Better than 3 too little! For some reason, it gets harder for me every EOCA to pick a theme. I know that I’ve done Life (photo 3), Summer Vintage (photo 4), and Relationship (photo 5, semester 1). I’m pretty sure that we didn’t have to do a theme in photo 1 nor photo 2. So My list has narrowed a little for my theme choices. Moments are captured on camera every second, so I thought I’d try to portray that as my focus. For me, it’s all about capturing those moments you either never get, hardly ever get, or may never get again. Capturing the moment is what photography is all about.

Required Pictures:

Slow Shutter Speed: Light Painting

I had wanted to try light painting for the LONGEST time, and I finally got someone to try it with me. First trial. A moment of first-time success and definitely a moment of awesomeness.

Large Depth of Field: Moments between Kelsey & Robbie.

When I zoom in, it’s focused for the most part in the back. I know its not completely focused but it’s not really blurry or pixelated or anything like that.

Studio Portrait: Jesi.

On to the Main Themed Photos!

Moments of Success: Graduation.

My cousin Sam is graduating this week from Lakeland High School, so its a huge moment in her life and our family’s as well. I take graduation as moments of success, independence, and for her to be proud of herself. I just told her to think about the fact that she’s graduating and how happy she is about it, and this is what she did. Well these two represented it the most.

She was doing the Winnie the Pooh’s “tink tink” thing..

She is happy to graduate!

Moments of Crazy Teenage Love: Sarah & Marcus. My camera died at the very beginning of this shoot, it was sad. But anyways,They have pretty crazy moments, they are a very weird couple… but I can say that because he’s my cousin. Plus, they admit it. Sarah also has a tendency to make every face possible in pictures, except smiling. So this was a moment of theirs that wasn’t abnormal for them… he was joking around, trying kick her and jumped, and yeah.. haha

“did you get that?…..YES. THAT was a moment. that was an AWESOME moment.” -Marcus

That moment when… someone gives you those certain ‘look’s. Kinda like.. a moment of intensity.

I’ve known him for a while and I have figured out during that time that he can make a lot of looks with his eyes, and they are blue, so who would be a better candidate?!

First, the look: smiling with his eyes. Showing he’s happy.

Second, the look: anger; nobody likes that look.

More Moments of Teenage Love: Kelsey & Robbie.

Everyone has their special moments as a couple, and Kelsey said he was leaving for a while so she wanted pictures before he left. Classic moments between these two were hilarious to watch. We were all laughing the whole time.

The dancing dip! Whatever it’s called.. a cute moment.

Kelsey: “I’m not leaving here until you let me touch your chin.” *puts foot out*

Robbie: “Okay, fine.” *puts foot out*

Some laughs.

Robbie pretending to propose with a pinecone..

And they have fun in random shopping carts.

Some Inspiration:

Brady Campbell, Family section, the 2nd picture of the boy hugging his dog.

Maui … even though we didn’t have the sunset… there are some cute beach pictures. If it would have been nicer outside at Honeysuckle Beach, these were going to be bigger inspiration for the couples pictures of Kelsey and Robbie.

Designs Mag  paint lighted around bike.

Jessi Taylor it’s a cute couple picture by a lake/pond. and heeeey! I took cute couple pictures by a lake!

My awesome brain. :P my result was 58% right-brained. yay for creativity! Yeah, I actually took that 54 question quiz..
