LIGHT AND COLOR
Photography (n.): 1. The art or practice of taking and processing photographs; 2. The
process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized surfaces by the chemical action of
light or of other forms of radiant energy, as x-rays, gamma rays, or cosmic rays.
‘Photography’ literally means to graph light. Light is therefore the most important part of
a photograph. If the light is not detected in the sensor, there is pretty much no photo. Light is
applied to several areas of photography. I chose to do a spinoff of the formal ‘elements’ of
photography. I try to focus on light as much as possible while creating photos. Light is related to
happiness and sun. Happiness and sunlight makes me smile, and the thing I love to photograph
the most is a smile. Smiles show that everything will be okay, and that whoever is showing their
pearly whites is enjoying themself, even just for that second the picture was taken. I like to
capture people in those natural moments, especially while laughing.
Color is what attracts the eye to the photo. Monochromatic images have as much color as
pictures with regular hues seen by the lens and eye. Bright colors in a frame stand out, capturing
the viewer just like a shutter button. Color allows one to define what is being looked at.
Light and color together can make something beautiful, which is what I tried to achieve
with most of these photographs. Using light and color to as much of an advantage as I can will
make someone look at my photos and keep looking. That is all a photographer can really ask for,
right? I want to show the brightness of the lights I see around me, I want to show what I can do
with light. As artists, we are always looking for feedback about our work, we are always looking
of how we can do something bigger and better to make our art stand out. I do that with myself as
a human being as well. I am always striving to be a better person.
The photos I am sharing in this project are from the beginning of the term to a few days
ago. They are of things that can be found in my hometown, people I care about, that are related
to something important that has happened recently, or are a part of my favorite time of the year,
the holiday season and my birthday. There are deeper concepts to some of these pictures, but not
to all of them. My life recently has been a whirlwind, therefore the reason these pictures do not
all go together. I like to relate a quote I have pinned on my wall to most of my work. That quote
would be “Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and
everything to do with the way you see them,” by Elliott Erwitt.
